Differences Between a Leviathan Spirit vs. Python Spirit

As disciples of Jesus, we must remember we are in a constant spiritual battle. The moment we accepted Christ, we became a threat to the enemy and his demons.

As we endeavor to recognize the enemy’s assault, two significant spiritual forces that must be identified are Python and Leviathan.

While both types of spirits can seem manifest in similar ways, they have distinct characteristics, and it is important to understand the differences to overcome them.

In this blog post, we will explore what a python spirit attack and a leviathan spirit attack are, how they can manifest in our lives, and strategies for overcoming them.

By understanding these attacks and how to combat them, we can better equip ourselves to live victorious lives in Christ.

The Difference Between Leviathan & Python Spirit

• A python spirit attack suffocates an individual’s purpose and calling & prevents them from moving forward; praying Christians are a prime target, as Paul was.
• A leviathan spirit is the king of pride. It twists communication, distorts perception, stirs accusation, and tries to break up relationships, as in Job.

The Python spirit is a powerful demonic force found in the Bible that causes feelings of despair, suffocation, and oppression.

The Leviathan spirit is a master of deception, which can disrupt relationships and cause confusion and pride. To resist both spirits, humility before God and recognizing that the battle isn’t against flesh and blood are key.

Definition of the Python Spirit

The spirit is a demonic force that can suffocate an individual’s purpose and calling, causing feelings of despair and oppression. It is often directed toward praying Christians. Acts 16:16 mentions the spirit of divination. Divination in greek is translated as “puthon” or “putho” which is why it’s called a python spirit.

As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl with a spirit of divination who brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling.

This is why the spirit is called a “Python spirit.”

Python was the name of the serpent or dragon in Greek mythology. This word describes the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown through supernatural means.

This spirit is often associated with divination and manipulation. It seeks to squeeze the life out of a person, hindering their spiritual growth and ability to hear from God.

It can manifest in many ways, such as hindering someone’s progress, preventing them from moving forward in their walk with God, and hindering them from hearing from God. It tries to choke the life out of a believer and disconnect them from the vine.

It is important to be aware of its presence and to resist it through prayer, fasting, reading the word of God, and submitting ourselves to the authority and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Characteristics of a Python Spirit

• Divination: The Python spirit is often associated with divination and the occult, seeking to gain knowledge or power through supernatural means.
• Strangulation: The name “Python” is derived from a serpent in Greek mythology that was said to strangle its victims. Similarly, the Python spirit tries to constrict and hinder the flow of the Holy Spirit in a person or a group.
• Persecution: The Python spirit is responsible for the persecution of believers in many cases, as it persecuted Paul and Silas–stringing the city against them and throwing them in prison.
• Hindrance: It is also seen as a hindrance to the work of God, seeking to interfere with or stop the spread of the Gospel.
• Deception: It is often described as a deceiver that twists the truth and causes blinders and veils to be put over an individual’s eyes, slowly, until their perception is distorted and they cannot hear God.
• False prophecy is also associated with false prophecy, claiming to speak for God but actually leading people astray.

Attacks from Behind

Python spirits are sneaky and often sneak up from behind to attack believers. In the Bible, we see this example in the story of Paul and Silas. They were on their way to the house of prayer, moving forward in their faith and ministry when a python spirit attacked them from behind.

The spirit took them by surprise, and they were thrown into prison.

This story illustrates how python spirits can catch believers off guard when they are least expecting it and how they can try to hold them back from moving forward in their faith. It sought to disrupt their prayer life.

Not realizing it would cause them to pray and praise God even more, causing an earthquake to set them free–bringing salvation to the prison guard and his family.

When dealing with any spiritual attack, we must remember that God uses everything for our good as long as we continue walking out our salvation with the Lord, and don’t quit!

Python Spirit is Persistent

One of the key characteristics of a python attack is that it’s persistent. The attack can happen gradually but seem sudden. Therefore, it is not a sudden, overwhelming event but rather a slow and steady erosion of the believer’s faith and strength.

By the time it has, it has a firm grip on a believer, it may seem sudden, but it’s been attacking for a while–and little by little, they’ve come into agreement with its lies.

The good news is we have everything we need for life and Godliness. Our tools are our spiritual armor, the word of God, worship, and prayer!

The girl with the Python spirit followed Paul and Silas for many days. It affected his emotional state. It wasn’t until it agitated him that he cast it out.

She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.

Acts 16:17-18 (ESV)

The python spirit will try to constrict its victim, cutting off their access to the things that give them life, such as prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers. Remember, this happened while Paul and Silas were “on the way to the place of prayer.”

Signs of a Python Spirit Attack

A python spirit attack can manifest in various ways, but certain traits are commonly associated with this it’s attacked.

The feeling of oppression or suffocation

First, a python spirit attack can manifest as a feeling of oppression or suffocation. This can manifest physically, emotionally, or spiritually and can leave the person feeling as though they are being weighed down or choked. It can also manifest in the form of depression, anxiety, or a sense of hopelessness.

Blocked From Moving Forward

Another characteristic of a python spirit attack is a sense of being hindered or blocked from moving forward in life.

This can manifest as stagnation in various areas of life, such as career, relationships, or spiritual growth. The person may feel stuck in a rut and unable to progress.

Interestingly, the girl with the Python spirit was following Paul and Silas as they were moving forward with the purpose God had for them.

A python spirit tries to steal, kill, and derail one’s destiny and calling. This can manifest as confusion, a lack of direction in life, or a feeling that one’s talents and abilities are being wasted.

Fear & Anxiety

Another characteristic of a python spirit attack is fear, insecurity, and lack of peace. This can manifest as a constant worry or anxiety or a feeling of being constantly on edge.

Paul became “greatly annoyed” by this spirit.

Real-Life Python Spirit Attack

In this video, Jennifer LeClaire teaches how the Python spirit can attack while on the way to the place of prayer. While teaching, a woman is attacked by an actual python spirit. It disrupts the meeting, and Jennifer and the intercessors take authority over it. Only, while the intercessors pray for the woman, the spirit jumps on Jennifer and starts attacking her. She calls the others over to help her break it off.

Strategies to Overcome a Python Spirit Attack

• Recognize and take the attack seriously: Understand the signs and symptoms of a python spirit attack and take immediate action to protect yourself.
• Close open doors to the enemy through sin. Seek God to grant you genuine repentance and deliverance. Nothing is worse than living a life of prayer and then getting entangled in a serious sin. If you are an intercessor and know you have an open door, you must close it and repent ASAP.
• Put on the full armor of God Ephesians 6:11-18 describes the armor of God, which includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God). Wearing this armor will protect you from the attacks of the enemy.
• Intimacy with Jesus. Cultivate a strong relationship with God through prayer, praise, worship, and meditation on His word. This will give you the strength and wisdom to overcome any attack.
• Surround yourself with believers who will pray for you, encourage you, and help you fight the good fight of faith. Have mature believers pray for and mentor you through these attacks. These believers can provide guidance, wisdom, and support. They can also help you to identify the areas of your life that may be vulnerable to attack and provide advice on how to protect yourself.

Definition of the Leviathan Spirit

The Leviathan spirit, also known as the “fleeing serpent” and “twisting serpent,” is a powerful demonic principality mentioned in the Job 41, Isaiah 27, and Psalms 148:7.

Job 41 has 34 verses describing Levithan; the whole chapter. It’s where we find the most information. Also, remember that Job lost everything in the beginning of the book. His “friends” or “relationships” misjudged him and his situation.

“Can you draw out Leviathan[b] with a fishhook
    or press down his tongue with a cord?…

His heart is hard as a stone,
    hard as the lower millstone.

When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid;
    at the crashing they are beside themselves…

… a creature without fear.

He sees everything that is high;
    he is king over all the sons of pride.”

Job 41:1, Job 24-25, Job Job 41:33-34

Leviathan is the king of pride, and it has the power to deceive and twist communication in relationships, causing division. We are the most susceptible to its attacks when we are not walking in humility in our relationships.

He will cause you to misunderstand what someone is saying and become offended or offer bad advice that wounds a person (like Job’s friends).

Likewise, it will twist your words and cause others to misinterpret your words.

The root is pride and deception. Someone under the influence of Leviathan believes the lies and accusations it’s directing toward a particular person.

It is associated with feelings of self-importance and haughtiness. Pride is a lack of humility. When we become offended

Its goal is to undermine relationships and discourage spiritual growth and intimacy with God. The best way to resist Leviathan is through humility and recognizing that the battle is not against flesh and blood.

Signs of a Leviathan Spirit

• Twists communication and undermines relationships
• Targets those pressing in for the kingdom
• Sows confusion and suspicion among people
• Stirs accusations and uses twisted words
• Whispers lies about those you are in relationships with
• Encourages anger and retaliation
• Known as the king of pride and can only be defeated with humility
• It can cause a person to remove themselves from God’s grace and protection by convincing a person to fight in the natural, carnal realm.
• Targets ministries and those who pray regularly and are pressing into God.

Characteristics of a Leviathan Spirit

• Pride: Leviathan is often described as a proud spirit that exalts itself and tries to stir accusation through pride.
• Rebellion: The heart of Leviathan is associated with rebellion and resistance to authority, both in the spiritual realm and human relationships.
• Deception: It is also seen as a deceiver that twists the truth to get people to turn against each other.
• Arrogance: Leviathan is associated with an arrogant attitude and a refusal to admit fault or take responsibility for one’s actions. Humility is needed.
• Stubbornness: It is often described as stubborn and resistant to change, holding on to its ways and refusing to listen to others.
• Self-reliance: Leviathan is associated with a belief in self-sufficiency, refusing to rely on God or others for help.

Humility Needed: Leviathan is the King of Pride

The Leviathan is often described as the king of pride in the Bible, with references to it as a powerful and proud creature in the book of Job.

To defeat the Leviathan, it is important to remember that humility is key.

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Proverbs 16:18

Therefore, we must humble ourselves and submit to God’s authority to overcome the Leviathan’s power.

God opposes the proud but shows grace to the humble.

James 4:6 (ESV)

Therefore, to be victorious over the Leviathan, we must put aside our pride and approach our relationships and God with humility.

Strategies To Defeat a Leviathan Spirit Attack

• Forgiveness is essential in relationships when facing the Leviathan spirit. Pride is always at the root of this spirit’s attack, so humility must be practiced and understanding cultivated to withstand its grip. Only through learning to forgive those around us for the offenses and accusations that Leviathan stirs up against us can we truly break free from its grasp.
• Put on the whole armor of God. Ephesians 6:11-18 tells us to put on the full armor of God so that we can stand against the schemes of the devil. This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
• Pray in humility. The spirit of Leviathan is known as the king of pride and can only be defeated through humility in prayer. We must come before God with a humble and contrite heart, recognizing our weaknesses and dependence on Him.
• Speak the truth. Leviathan’s power comes from twisting words and spreading lies. By speaking the truth in love, we can break the power of this spirit and restore communication and relationships. Speak the truth over yourself and those who are coming against you–even when you don’t feel in–amid the battle when the anger and feelings of offense are the strongest–speak the Word over the situation. Refuse to accuse and speak against those stirred up against you.
• Use the authority of Jesus’ name. As believers, we have been given dominion over all the enemy’s power (Luke 10:19). We must use this authority to resist the spirit of Leviathan and command it to leave in the name of Jesus.
• Surround yourself with believers who will pray for you, encourage you, and help you fight the good fight of faith. Having mature believers pray for and disciple you is essential in your journey with the Lord.

It’s easy to get caught up in the natural, carnal realm and fight against people who have been used as pawns by the Leviathan spirit. But, unfortunately, it’s also easy to become a pawn yourself if you’re quick to take offense.

We fall into its trap when we agree with the accusations and lies that the Leviathan spirit is whispering about other people.

To resist this demonic attack, we must take authority over the accusations and stand firm in the faith, knowing that the power of God is greater than any principality.

Understanding the difference between python and leviathan spirit will help you recognize when they attack; and how to respond.

A python focuses on restriction and oppressing one’s purpose, almost like a boa constrictor squeezing its prey. Python spirits will try to bring you down through feelings of hopelessness and despair that cloud your thoughts and leave you unable to move forward.

On the other hand, leviathans are the kings of pride, as they attempt to twist your communication with others so that they’ll misunderstand you and agree with the lies feeding the pride monster. 

Not only do they mess with how we communicate, but also our perception of reality and the relationships we hold dear.

Both spirits can be incredibly powerful adversaries in spiritual warfare, so if either is attacking you, it’s best to arm yourself with knowledge of their tactics to stay resilient in the face of this opposition.
